The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, commonly abbreviated to Glastonbury or Glasto, is the largest green field open-air music and performing arts festival in the world. The festival is best known for its contemporary music, but also features dance, comedy, theatre, circus and many other arts.

Glastonbury was heavily influenced by hippie ethics and the free festival movement in the early 1970s.

The organiser Michael Evis decided to host the festival in 1970 after seeing a Led Zeppelin gig. The festival was called at first Pilton festival cause the festival takes place in South west England at Worthy Farm between the small villages of Pilton and Pylle.

Michael run the festival with his wife until she died in 1999 and is now assisted by his daughter

Emily Eavis.

Glastonbury festival donates most of their profits to charities.

The festival took a year off in 1996 to allow the land to recover and give the organisers a break, but returned in 1997 bigger than ever including Radiohead´s headlining Pyramid Stage set on the Saturday which is said to be one of the greatest ever Glastonbury performances.
